Pure Genius

seriously amazing

Separate your space with paper in the most complex way as possible.  Well ToDo is way over my head with designing a paper screen with "code based generative design". I understand the concept but damn, these guys take it to a whole new level. Here is a blerb from their site (click the link above to read the full story):

Deco-Code project is an exploration of the new creative potential resulting from the encounter between digital fabrication tools and code-based generative design strategies, aimed at developing an intelligent system to generate decorative models able to adapt and evolve in a dinamyc and unique way, according to the contest they are meant for. Have fun with comically misspelled offers of love and enthusiastic advice on how to get rich, fast: let our custom generative software weave them all into something very, very different from your grandma's wallpaper.  -ToDo

Not sure if i like the name or the wallpaper better?  Continuing with this bomb design studio ToDo (yeah thats right i said bomb) they finially came up with what to do with spam. Turn it into super cool wallpaper, right thats totally normal - I guarantee you will and have never seen anything like it.  I am obviously a huge fan.

Talk about a beautiful mix of new and old this is the Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona. Let me nerd out on you for a sec -  The original neo-classical structure was built from 1844-1848 (yeah nuts!) and the contemporary add/remodel of the canopy was added in 1997-2005 by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue (EMTB) .  The 67 different colors of the mosaics are suppose to represent the colorful produce and fruit stalls that make up the market place.  Seriously gorgeous! This is definitely on my must see list

Purple Daybed Room

DIY Project - Modifying the FJELLSE twin bed from IKEA - goal platform daybed

Platform beds seem to be crazy expensive these days and made form "engineered wood" (great ok yes i get it, just no longevity). So i began my search for  a solid wood twin bed frame.  I already new the bed had to be purple.  I looked at all of my "goto" places and craigslist, which failed me. So I gave in and did the unthinkable.  Yup, you guessed it IKEA.  Don't get me wrong IKEA is great for certain things but when it  comes to me and furniture I would rather re-use an existing piece and give it a new life.  But you win some and loose some. This project and budget IKEA got me. The FJELLSE is an unfinished, solid wood, twin bed frame that I couldn't pass up, come on 29.99 (oh and slates which were about the same price as the bed; i will never understand that).  To perfect right, I'll just have to modify it a bit, no worries.

So i thought,  I actually haven't ever modified an unassembled - build it yourself, bed before (oohh man..). Usually they are already built and i saw a little hear and there, aahhh - the intimidation is setting in. Ok, just have a plan,  I go through the directions and simplify the process - Not bad only 2 cuts.  I have to cut the two longer leg/headboard pieces down to the same size as the footboard legs are. Simple as pie.

You'll see.....

cut and sand down the rough edges
the one on the left is the small already cut leg the right is the one i cut and sanded

time to paint
low voc-purple (Behr - color: wild grapes) waterbase semi gloss paint
finish it off with a waterbase laquer to protect it

Completed daybed

I think this is the first project that I actually didn't have to run to homedepot more than once...sweet. So my planed out modified FJELLSE bed worked great! Planning it out and having the right tools really do save you time. I'm sure you've heard of "work smarter not harder" well this totally aplies to just about everything; thanks dad ;)

Gallery Wall

before

after

Plain walls?  Here is a great way to make a statement in your small space.

It's also functional! (function should always be first)  If you have lots of art and/or a small space this is a great way to use all the pieces you just had to have. This is a complete mix of canvases and frames.  There really aren't any rules to what you hang, it's more how you hang them - in this case IT'S ALL ABOUT SCALE.

My trick is to hang the  largest ones first (you can see they were the large earring holder on left and vogue frame, top right) and then just work in the others. Grouping some smaller frames  help to balance out the larger ones (as seen in the 2 small frames below the vogue poster).

Picture Templetes - wall savers
Here's a cheater method that I started out with: make simple picture templets by tracing your frames on paper (you may have to tape several together for larger items), then just hang them up to see where and how you want them places, this will save you time and your walls.

Proper Hanging
You really dont want a frame whacking anyone in the head.  So just get the right wall mounts, and dry wall screws. Especially for the heavier frames. I could tell you what works for me, but there are so many different scenarios that it's best just to ask your local hardware store.

Extra Storage
Painters tape is also great to help decide where you want your shelving

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF WALL SPACE is key in small spaces.  Since there is never enough closet space, and minimal amount of floor space, walls are where it's at.  I created a little arts and crafts station with just 2 floating shelves - functional and stylish.

Neutral Colors ?

Purple - Cobalt Blue - Turquoise

rug - rugusa.com
curtains - ikea.com
jewelry tree - www.urbanoutfitters.com
headboard - nextag.com
vintage frames - goodwills, flea markets

So these are my colors I'm obsessed with as of right now, with accents of gold and black and white. The cobalt blue and dark purple act pretty neutral in the space.  I know what your thinking - how is blue and purple a neutral? "Neutrals" in the color world are different then actual neutrals, like beige, tans, whites, etc. These "neutral colors"  i am referring to are colors that allow you to mix other colors with them. without being overwhelming. This helps for people like me, who have a hard time choosing just 3 main colors. So you can pick a few deeper colors in the same tonal range then layer some bright pops thought out the space.

This is a great example of "neutral colors" (the cobalt blue and deep purple) with a pop of turquoise and gold.  The gold is in the yellow family so it works great as an accent to the purple (purple and yellow are complimentary-or directly across from each other on the color wheel). The black and white rug help to ground the furniture and all the colors ;)  If you go crazy colors with the furniture and textiles I personally like to keep the rug with black and white - pattern can be whatever.

Venice Cali - Home Sweet Home

I'm a Lucky girl - i moved (yes yes again, I know...) from beloved San Francisco to Venice Cali.  Both amazing but Venice is definitely where my heart is at, for now ;) .  Seriously you can't beat the weather, people, awesome vibes, it's perfection.

While ca-roozin down the street with my girls (Katie and kelly) Katie spotted this yard sale.  We somewhat slowed down to do a drive by viewing. Seemed good so we pulled a u -turn right there, totally worth it.  Come to find out the guy - Jordan, who is a high school teacher, goes to Bali to surf when he can.  There he hand selects and brings back amazing home goods.  Gorgeous gorgeous finds with tons of potential.

Check these out.  I bought the only 2 left. Perfect for a little spice in my new room (maybe living room but not sure if i want to share them). They can be little end tables and/or stools. Which brings me to my first Small Space Tip: small spaces need multi functional furnishings. This optimizes functions with still considering the look and style.

Bali night stand and/or stools

I love them! This is a great start to my new town :)

Ethnic Vibe

Ethnic Vibe trendy or here to stay?  Seems this look is pretty timeless, although extremely trendy as of right now. It's definitely "in" in  fashion and interior decor.  I personally think its a playful way to design, it adds great pops of color in a sophisticated mature manor.

Try some faltering sophisticated ikat textiles around your home, to give this look a try.  Mix in some dark woods tones, variations of textures (baskets, fuzzy or shaggy throws, or rugs) and you will be on your way to the Ethnic Vibe. Here are some affordable throw pillows options to start you out.

All these are from etsy.com

even just one - gives a  great vibe

a few interior inspirations too....

LOVE!

Black and white but has great  pattern

It doesn't just have to be ikat. Look at this awesome chair -   It's a mid-century chair with multiple fabrics. Good news you don't just have to decide on one fabric. It's also green.  ;)

I want one..

OHHH San Francisco

at Filmore and Haight St. - Lower Haight, San Fran

Street art is bomb in SF to start with, but Lower Haight probably has some of my favorites. I've spotted a few early Banksy pieces around the city as well. It's pretty amazing how tagging evolved from illegal acts to legit works of art.  Street art is now appreciated like fine art in galleries. To me murals in the streets are even more amazing, considering the surface, scale, and sometime heights of which they are created at.

Fall in love with some Street art? Photograph it, blow it up, mat and frame it or get inspired an create your own.  Point is it's amazing art, use it in your home.

FABRIC JACKPOT

Just so happens Lower Haight is great for fabric finds too.  Look at these babies
